Kumeu River

Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2022, Auckland, New Zealand

£13.80

With grapes plucked from six disparate vineyards throughout the Kumeu region, only the very finest make their way into this fine Chardonnay. While Kumeu River may lack the brand recognition of rivals like Leflaive, Marcassin, and Ramonet, this is likely to change in the not-too-distant future. Uncorking this half-bottle will release a scent of fruit - most notably lemon and sliced apple - balanced by stone, while the rich body teases the palate with a combination of ripe peach and apricot, tempered by hints of baked pastry and charred lime, before giving way to a lingering, malty finish. Estate Chardonnay is young but perfectly formed, ready to be enjoyed today or left to age.

WHAT IT GOES WITH

This delectable Chardonnay is a fine companion to many meat dishes, most notably a tender and glazed pork loin. However, this also brings a creamy fish to live, and even brings a perfect balance to a traditional roasted chicken.

ABOUT THE VINEYARD

Owned and operated by the Brajkovich family since 1937, Kemeu River is the pride of Auckland - the astonishing range of Chardonnays produced by this estate prove that there is much more to New Zealand winemaking than simply Sauvignon Blanc. The estate covers some 30 hectares, with multiple vineyards laid on clay oil over sandstone. This ensures that Kemeu River's grapes do not require irrigation, ensuring sustainable quality of growth all year around. Any grapes harvested for wine are also harvested and checked by hand, ensuring that quality control standards remain at the forefront of this estate's priorities.
